I honor my spiritual teachers and all those who came before them.
I honor all who reveal my sacredness.

A South Indian oral tradition, in a lineage dating back thousands of years.
Through highly meditative states and committed spiritual practice, ancient seers (Rishis) envisioned and heard revelations which they transmitted orally. These mantras became encoded as the Vedas, revealing wisdom and knowledge. (The word Veda itself means “knowledge”.)
I became interested in Sanskrit chanting years ago; as time permitted, I explored various popular trends and practices. But those didn’t stick with me. Exploring more, I listened to some authentic Vedic Chanting and my ears were opened. As foreign as it sounded to my Western classical musical training, the vibrations of the chants came alive. The chanting was unwavering and powerful, with deep sensitivity that resonated deep within me. My sacredness was stirred. Inspired, I learned how to pronounce Sanskrit phonetics properly. My experience of chanting completely changed.
With regular Vedic Chanting practice, I handle stress better and become less engaged with trivial pursuits. I have more mental clarity and am truer to my inner self. Sacredness is not a random thought or wish. It lives here, within each of us.
My curiosity was piqued: how does this work? I reviewed brain biology, searching for scientific research and current studies that might help explain my personal observations. My treasure hunt yielded a motherlode!
Various areas in the brain correspond with listening, forming new sounds, learning new intricate rhythms. With authentic Sanskrit pronunciation, certain neural pathways are stimulated and new neural connections formed (neuroplasticity!). We listen differently, learn how to produce a variety of new sounds using our mouths and tongues. We breathe differently as we learn new intricate rhythms. Motor, sensory and areas that process emotions are activated. The brain and nervous system are processing and conducting these vibrations, without our being conscious of it. This all correlates with increased cognitive health and a more balanced nervous system.
Fascinating! Contemporary research supports that cognitive decline can be significantly delayed, or even potentially avoided through two key processes: learning a foreign language and musical learning. Activating these areas of the brain is a key to increasing our neuroplasticity. Vedic chanting, which includes and combines elements of both language and music, is uniquely positioned to stimulate these areas of the brain. Coordinating our processes of listening to and producing unique sounds; learning and visually recognizing patterns; this along with applying specific chanting guidelines engage and stimulate neurological functions of different locations in the brain.
We live in a magnificent body in a magnificent Universe. Modern research correlates and aligns beautifully with the legacy of the ancient Rishis’ visionary chants for living a happy, balanced, sacred life! Vedic Chanting is for everyone, mankind’s legacy to itself.
